Mahabir hits 66 in trial match
LEFT-HANDED middle-order batsman Gregory Mahabir led the way with 66 but the Daren Ganga XI was dismissed for 226 runs at the end of the first day of the four-day trial cricket match at the Sir Frank Worrell Grounds, UWI St Augustine campus, yesterday. At the close, the Dwayne Bravo XI were 11 runs without loss. Mahabir and his captain shared a 92-run stand for the third wicket, after the Ganga XI won the toss decided to bat. However they were in some trouble at 53 for two midway in the opening session.
Lunch was taken with the Ganga XI at 105 for two, and the pair took the score to 145 before Ganga was caught and bowled by medium pacer Reshard Harris for 50, which included four boundaries. Mahabir was next to go, caught by Bravo at slip off a Sanjeev Gooljar off-break, and the Ganga unit slipped from 185 for four at tea to 226, despite 23 from Samuel Badree. Gooljar snapped four wickets for 46 runs for the Bravo XI while pacer Richard Kelly took three for 55. The second day’s play will bowl off today at 9.30 am.
