Ramesh tells Govt: Fix laws in early 2006

FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL Ramesh Law-rence Maharaj yesterday called on the Government to implement the Equal Opportunities Act in 2006 and amend all laws which it believes deficient when Parliament resumes its sittings next month. Identifying the Equal Opportunities Act, DNA Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act as some pieces of legislation which Government must place priority on in 2006, Maharaj said if there are any alleged deficiencies in these pieces of legislation, they must be addressed in an expeditious manner so that the laws could be implemented. The former AG said it would be hypocritical for Government to break the law that it has sworn to uphold. Maharaj said a critical constitutional amendment bill had been omitted from the anti-crime legislation package that has been discussed by the Government and Opposition over the last two months. He claimed that without this bill, Government will be unable to implement the death penalty.
