Mohammed slams unbeaten 107

WEST Indies Under-19 vice-captain Jason Mohammed struck a fine, unbeaten 107 yesterday to lead a Dwayne Bravo XI fight-back against a Darren Ganga-led team, on the second day of a specially arranged four-day practice match at the UWI grounds in St Augustine. The talented player, who led the TT youth team to the coveted double in the TCL Group West Indies Youth Challenge in St Vincent earlier this year, hit nine boundaries as Bravo’s XI reached 221 for seven in reply to Ganga XI’s first innings total of 226. Mohammed, a member of the 14-member regional squad who will participate in next year’s Youth World Cup in Sri Lanka, featured in a sixth-wicket partnership of 113 with senior team wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed (51), to rescue the innings after it plunged to 80 for six.

The matured knock by Mohammed came off 222 deliveries in 308 minutes and was a chanceless innings. The right-handed Gibran Moham-med batted solidly for his half century which was compiled in 147 minutes from 115 balls and contained six fours. Skipper Bravo failed to move the scorer, having been dismissed without scoring. The right hander was caught by former West Indies fast bowler Mervyn Dillon off the bowling of TT’s Under-19 pacer Jeewan Ramroop. The leading bowlers for the Ganga X1 were fast bowlers Atiba Alert with two for 41 and Ramroop two for 47. The selectors, headed by chairman Dudnath Ramkessoon, are using the game to prepare for the restart of the Carib Beer Series which will see TT clashing with Jamaica at Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal from January 6-9. Play today starts at 9.30 am.
