Burns, Scott top NAAA athletes
SPRINTER Marc Burns and hammer throw queen Candice Scott followed on their successes at the recent Trinidad and To-bago Olympic Committee Awards (TTOC) when they were named the National Amateur Athletic Association Male and Female Athletes of the Year for 2005 at a gala ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Port-of-Spain. Their awards did not come as any surprise, as both athletes made huge strides during the past athletic season. Burns who along with compatriot and best friend Darrel Brown dipped un-der the ten-second barrier at the National Champ-ionship at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, and also won the gold medal at the World Championship in Monaco, France. Although his time at the World Championship was ten-seconds flat, he won the national title in a time of 9.96. He was later seventh at the World Games in Helsinki, Finland. The beautiful Scott, meanwhile, followed her ninth place finish at the Oympics Games in the hammer throw by smashing the record at the Central American and Caribbean Senior Champ-ionship in Bahamas early last year and also set a new national record with a massive 71.45 metres heave. Meanwhile, two of this country’s greatest ever athletes Edwin Anthony Roberts and Hasely Joaquim Crawford were yesterday inducted into the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Hall of Fame at a ceremony also held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. After the induction Crawford told the gathering there was nothing that would please him more than seeing a repeat of his achievements in the coming Olympics Games.
