A SUSPECTED counterfeiter is murder victim number 15 of 2006, and 15 murders have already been committed in just nine days this year. Dead is Chet Iton, 47, of Flagstaff Hill, Long Circular, St James. According to reports, Iton, 47, was at the Hirondell Street, Morvant home of his friend Brian Darcuile and girlfriend Afesha Joseph, along with Derrick Maloney, at 9.40 pm on Sunday, when two men dressed in black burst into the room and started shooting. Everyone fled the scene, including Iton, who was fatally shot in the neck, buttocks and head. The other occupants of the room sustained injuries for which they were treated and hospitalised. Investigations revealed that Iton, who was deported from the United States four years ago after serving a sentence, was reportedly involved in cases of counterfeiting, according to police. Police believe Iton was killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Two hours earlier, Keston Daniel was shot dead in St Augustine. He was the 14th person murdered in 2006. Visiting the scene were Snr Supt Travajo, Supt Philips, ASPs Cummings and Trim, Insp Hilaire, Cpl Vidale and Sgt Forde of the Homicide Bureau. Cocorite man killed in drive-by By Camille Clarke A 30-YEAR-OLD man of Harding Place, Cocorite, was shot dead, and his 15-year-old nephew injured in a drive-by shooting in St Augustine, on Sunday night. According to reports, Keston Daniel, alias Lao, and his nephew, Kurland, were at the corner of Noel Street and St John’s Road at about 7.45 pm after attending a family wedding at the St Augustine Regional Community Centre, when gunmen drove by in a car and opened fire at the two. Daniel died on the spot and Kurland was rushed to the Children’s Hospital at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. He had been shot in his buttocks. He was treated for his injuries and warded in stable condition. Daniel’s body was taken to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy, where it was revealed that he had been shot eight times. Police sources revealed that the murder was gang-related, and Daniel had been hiding out in the area. Supt Phillips, ASP Fredericks, Insp Modeste, Sgt Daniels, PC Ramjattan, and Sgt Forde of the Homicide Bureau visited the scene. The business communities in St Joseph and St Augustine have expressed disgust over the murders in the area, and the failure of the police to respond immediately since the dilapidated St Joseph Police Station was abandoned. On Friday, officers of the Social Welfare Association ordered that the 100-year-old building be closed due to its condition. The Homicide Bureau is continuing investigations.
