Arjune gives Guyana solid start

PHILIPSBURG: A half-century stand be-tween openers Sewnar-ine Chattergoon and Krishna Arjune gave Guyana a solid start against the Leeward Islands on the first day of their four-day Carib Beer Cricket Series match at the Carib Lumber Ballpark here yesterday. At lunch, Guyana, who won the toss and chose to bat, were 94 for two with Arjune unbeaten on 47.

Chattergoon, who was dropped on six, was run out for 42 after he and Arjune had put on 91 for the first wicket.

Chattergoon failed to take full advantage of his let-off when debutant Steve Liburd floored a catch at third slip off the bowling of pacer Adam Sanford before he departed after a mix up with his partner. Arjune, who drove a delivery close to the extra cover boundary off Omari Banks, sent back Chattergoon who was coming for third run. But the left-hander failed to beat Wilden Cornwall’s throw to the bowler.

Earlier, Chattergoon had driven him through the covers to bring up his team’s 50 off 83 balls in 53 minutes.

Arjune, who has played some good pull shots and drives, lost Narsingh Deonarine off the last ball before lunch when Deonarine drove an easy catch to short cover off Banks and departed for one to make the score 94 for two.
