Manswell scores easy victory again
HEAVYWEIGHT boxer Ketson Manswell has another east victory on Thursday night when he stopped Salimer Zimmerman of Curacao in the first round of their scheduled six-rounder at the Cosmic Boxing Gym in Marabella. The Tobagonian took just one and a half minutes staggering his opponent with blows to his head and body forcing refereee Tommy Thomas to intervene to prevent serious injury to the obviously hurt Zimmerman. Afterwards president of the boxing board Melchior Taylor said there was now a need for Manswell to take on fighters of better quality in the future. Taylor said it appears Mans-well is getting better and the Boxing Board will look closely at his future opponents to ensure they are capable of testing Manswell. Manswell’s record now stands at nine bouts, all by the knock-out route. From the start Manswell went for a big knock-out punch when he connected Zimmerman with a powerful blow to the right eyebrow that forced referee Thomas to bring the fight to a stop. When the fight resumed Manswell unleashed another barrage of blows that prompted Thomas to stop the fight for yet another time this time giving him the win. The main bout followed two entertaining fights, the first which saw Trinidadian Miguel Agard defeat Malcolm Smith of Barbados in the fourth round. The scheduled four-round fight saw an equal exchange of punches that Agard eventually got the better in the end. In the other bout, Wendell Jokhu won his debut fight against Arima boy Selwyn Guy by an unanimous decision. After four rounds Jokhu proved to be the better man in the eyes of the judges, much to the delight of the crowd. Cecil Forde, president of the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) told Newsday that there was need to thank the Ministry of Sports and its Director of Sports Paul Newallo for their assistance in making the card possible. He said up to the day before the card, he was unsure of putting on the fights because of a lack of funding. He pointed out that the Sport and Youth Affairs Ministry, through Newallo came to the rescue with a $11,000 sponsorship.
