ODPM urges caution in flooded areas
THE Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is advising residents of areas affected by floods to take all necessary precautions. In a media release, the ODPM said while there have been no reports of deaths, injuries, missing persons or evacuees and there are no reports of damage to houses or other buildings, there will be an immediate need for the clearing of cesspits after the water has subsided. They are urging residents of flood-hit areas to observe the following measures:
- Move out of the house or building (with personal emergency supplies) to safe high ground, or go to a relative or friend if your immediate space is threatened by flood waters. Please take pets with you.
- Turn off all utilities at the main switch if evacuation becomes necessary.
- Do not touch any electrical equipment unless it is in a dry area, or if you are standing on a piece of dry wood with rubber footwear and gloves.
- Remove all valuables and wrap all important personal items (family documents, etc) in plastic bags and store in an elevated area.
- Do not attempt to cross any stretch of flood water on foot, especially if the water is above your knees.
- Do not drive your car in water more than two feet high, as rapidly rising flood waters can lift your car and carry it away.
- Do not go sightseeing in flooded areas.
- Do not play or bathe in flood waters.
The ODPM said the Fire and Police Services are on alert throughout the weekend and the Regional Corporations are also on standby. The public is advised to contact the emergency response service for any life threatening situations at telephone numbers 990 or 999.
