Blast victim dies at hospital

St James bomb blast victim, Russell Thomas, 51, died on Sunday night at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (PoSGH). Thomas was among 12 persons injured when a blast rocked the Smokey and Bunty Bar at Western Main Road on October 14.

The bomb had been placed at the base of a telephone booth.

Thomas’ family is appealing for public or Government assistance with burial fees.

Thomas’ wife, Yvette, said "he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, after the bomb blast, and he lost a lot of blood; he never recovered." Thomas suffered burns and lacerations to the right side of his body. Thomas, who required four pints of blood after being injured in the explosion, died at 11:45 pm Sunday.

His family had been appealing to the public for assistance during the past three months. Thomas received two pints after urgent efforts by the St James Radiotherapy clinic. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and spent the last few months of his life recovering from the blast at the PoSGH, said Thomas. "Our family was unable to provide the blood, because they are sufferers of high-blood pressure and diabetes. He was the sole bread-winner of the family," she said.

The first bomb blast occurred on July 11, when a garbage bin was detonated on Frederick Street. The blast injured 11 persons including Yvonne McIvor, who lost a leg.

The second blast occurred on George Street on August 10, but no one was injured. The third blast occurred in a dumpster in the back of the KFC building at the Independence Square outlet on September 10.
