Omar Khan makes case for ‘Tadpole’

THE SELECTION of Grenada’s off-spinner Rawle Lewis for the West Indies team ahead of Dave Mohammed is a huge disappointment to many local officials and administrators, including Omar Khan, manager of the Trinidad and Tobago team.

Emotions run high especially after Mohammed almost single handedly bowled the Trinidad and Tobago to victory over Jamaica in the Carib Beer Series match last week at the Sir Frank Worrell Ground, St Augustine.

Khan told Newsday yesterday that the selection of Lewis was "puzzling" since the Grenadian has been tried so many times before. In addition, he said Lewis has not shown anything extraordinary in recent times but is still being tried and tested.

"I do not see Lewis bringing anything to the team although he has matured as a player and individual," Khan said.

He said if the West Indies’ selectors were looking for a player for the long term, then "Tadpole" Mohammed should have been the obvious choice.

Lewis was included in the squad of 17 players selected to tour New Zealand from February 16 to March 29. After selectors met in Trinidad on Monday, it was agreed that Guyana’s Shivnarine Chanderpaul would be retained as captain for the tour with his countryman Ramnaresh Sarwan as deputy.

Also making the team was Daren Ganga, the Trinidad and Tobago captain and opening batsman.

The squad also includes hard hitting Chris Gayle, Runako Morton, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith, wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, Ian Bradshaw, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Daren Powell and Deighton Butler.
