Lara boost for TT vs Guyana
GROUND conditions, the pitch as well as weather will determine what approach will be taken by Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana when they meet in a crucial Carib Beer Series regional match at Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre from 10 am today. Guyana manager Carl Moore said yesterday that it is only when they see the conditions this morning, his team will decide whether they will bat or bowl first. But he added that if his team does bat first they will be going all-out to post a very big total and then try to defend it. He said his batsmen have done well in their last few matches, with centuries from Travis Dowling and Narsingh Deonarine, while a few other players made valuable contributions. With the ball he said, fastbowler Reon King has been designated the responsibility of restricting the TT batting. His team has been boosted by the return of captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his deputy Ramnaresh Sarwan. Both arrived on Wednesday night after attending a leadership development course in Barbados and they practiced yesterday with the rest of their teammates ahead of today’s start. According to Moore his batsmen are expected to pile on the runs, including Sarwan, who he said is due for a big innings. Moore also welcomed the return of batsman Krishna Arjune who scored 152, after recovering from injuries, in their last clash with the Leeward Islands, which ended in a draw. Only Wednesday, Moore said his team was not affected by the return of triple world record holder Brian Lara for the match. Yesterday Lara and the rest of the TT team appeared ready for anything the Guyanese are hoping to throw at them. TT manager Omar Khan said his players are all fully fit and are confident of winning their second straight match. Left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed who was disappointingly left out of the West Indies squad to tour New Zealand will have something to prove to the regional selectors in the next four days. Mohammed, nicknamed "Tad-pole" was left out in preference for another leg-spinner Rawl Lewis. The TT outfit will also pin their hopes on skipper and batsman Daren Ganga who scored a century in his team’s victory over Jamaica last week. Allrounder Dwayne Bravo is also expected to play a vital role in the outcome of the match.
