WI Board suspend 2007 Aussie tour

BRIDGETOWN: The West Indies Cricket Board has suspended the proposed tour by Australia, scheduled to be held after the 2007 Cricket World Cup, a senior official said yesterday.

Roger Brathwaite, the WICB’s chief executive, said that it was decided to suspend the series "until a more feasible time" after it was realised that the timeline would have been impossible to accommodate the series of Tests and one-day matches.

"We had discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket Australia (CA) and it was decided it would be best to postpone the tour until a more feasible time," Brathwaite said from his office in Antigua.

He could not give a timeline as to when the series might be played, but noted that the West Indies were very keen to have the series and fulfill the ICC’s future tours programme.

"The tour was originally scheduled for before the World Cup, but after the dates were brought forward for the World Cup, we decided to put the Australian visit until after the World Cup," Brathwaite explained.

The World Cup will be played in the West Indies from March 11 to April 28, the first time the region will be hosting the 16-team tournament.

"We (West Indies) are due to visit England for Tests and one-day matches immediately after the World Cup, so it was impossible to fit in the Australia tour," Brathwaite added.

"We are hoping to play four Tests in England in that summer."
