Shot teen begs to see her murdered baby

TEEN mother Kadeisha Mitchell kept asking for her murdered baby Zakia as she lay in bed at San Fernando General Hospital yesterday. Up to late yesterday, the 15-year-old mother, who was also shot at her Pierreville home in Mayaro on Sunday night, was unaware that 14-month-old Zakia had been killed. “Where is my princess? My baby?” Mitchell kept asking nurses on the ward. “How is she? Is she going to be alright?” Mitchell asked at midday yesterday, before police detectives arrived at the hospital to interview her about Sunday's incident. While in her mother’s arms at their home at 11.45 pm Sunday night, gun shots rang out. Several pellets from what police said was a shotgun struck Zakia. Mitchell fell on the kitchen floor when she was hit by a hail of pellets in the face, hands and chest.

Zakia was hit in the face, chest and stomach. The baby and mother were rushed to the nearby Mayaro District Hospital, where Zakia was pronounced dead. Medical sources at the hospital said Mitchell was still in a state of shock yesterday and was also unaware of her baby’s fate. Mitchell underwent surgery in her left eye. A medical source told Newsday yesterday that on waking up from sleep, Mitchell, who is under police guard, asked for Zakia. Mitchell was interviewed by Insp Fitzgerald George and another detective of Homicide Division (South). The detectives also viewed the injuries Mitchell sustained during the incident. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
