Defence Force win Fire battle

CHAMPIONS Defence Force were forced to battle all the way for a 52-45 victory over Fire in their Championship Division match of the Courts All Sectors Netball League. But arch-rivals Police whipped CFC 54-33 in another encounter in the same bracket on Saturday last. It was even-steven 13-13 at the end of the first quarter in the Army-Coast Guard women match. Defence Force managed to surge ahead 28-26 at the halfway stage and they broke open the face-off during the three-quarter period when they led by 44-33. Fire rallied strongly in the final stanza, but could only close to seven goals in the end.


Anastacia Wilson netted 35 goals from 46 attempts for Defence Force with Lystra “Twinkletoe” Zamore scoring 17 of 21.  Merlicia Lovell got 24 of 34 and Simone Morgan had 21 of 32 for Fire. The Policewomen led all the way 15-7; 29-16; 41-24 in their match with CFC with Gushier Grant scoring 16 goals from 17 attempts, Donna Elise Charles getting 28 of 34 and Euphemia Huggins sinking ten of 17 for the winners.  Janelle Barker scored 24 of 30 and Kamila Sobers recorded nine of 16 for CFC. Defence Force were also successful in the Alternative Division, beating  Bermudez X 48-42 on Karlene Sylvester netting 43 goals and Kimeria James, five.  Kathy James made 36 and Julia Britto got six scored goals for the Bermudez women.


But  Bermudez Y held off  TSTT 39-33 in another match in the division on 33 goals from Petal Wilkins and six from Helen Curden.  Sarah Hutchinson scored 18, Leann O’Brien sank 11 and Samantha Purcell, four,  for the losing team. Fire edged Cilnetres 42-40 in a keen encounter on T’Shura Smart getting 18 goals from 30 attempts and Adasha Norton, 14 of 28 for the winners.   Jeselle Navarro scored 32 goals, Jocelyn Marcelle and Margaret Jack had four each for the beaten tem. On Monday in Retro Division action, TSTT clobbered Cilnetres 39-13 while Avengers dumped Les Enfants 24-19 and Police defeated Fire 27-23.
