Manswell tackles Bajan in Princes Town

HEAVYWEIGHT boxing champion Kertson Manswell will enter the ring tomorrow when he opposes Barbadian Curtis Murray in scheduled six-round bout at the Princes Town Regional Corporation Car Park.

Manswell is following up on his trademark "one-round" demolition of Curacao’s Salimer Zimmerman at the Cosmic Boxing Gym in Marabella recently.

The victory took his professional record to nine wins with as many knock-outs, and tomorrow’s fight is expected to improve his record even further.

With the win boxing board officials — ` including president Melchior Taylor, immediately demanded tougher opponents for the talented boxer.

From 8 pm, when the card organised by Surefire Promotions with Cecil Forde at the helm gets underway boxing fans are expected to get a fistic treat.

But all eyes will be on the 29-year-old Tobago-born Manswell, a formidable puncher who has had an impressive amateur career and is looking for similar success on the professional circuit. His bout against the little known Bajan boxer is not expected to last the distance despite the promise of the chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago boxing board of control that Manswell’s opponents will be carefully screened.

This is being done to ensure that he gets a fight that will test his ability and not become a one-round affair which disappoints the boxing fans and does his attempt to attract international attention no good.

The fight will be the feature bout on a card which will coincide with the staging of the sixth anniversary of the collaboration between the Cosmic Boxing Promotions and the Princes Town Regional Corporation to promote boxing in the district.

It will follow a clash between Trinidad and Tobago’s Waldron Brooks and Port-of-Spain based Guyanese Ivan Azure.

There will also be four top amateur fights which will precede the two main bouts. These fights will showcase several local developing talents.

The weighing-in ceremony for the main fights will be held today at the Tigers Boxing Gym, Prince Street, Port-of-Spain.
