First Citizens gives $20,000 to sailing

THE TRINIDAD and Tobago Sailing Association (TTSA) Youth Sailing School was the recipient of a $20,000 cheque from the First Citizens Sports Foundation.

The financial contribution will go towards the TTSA Outreach Programme.

The Outreach Programme, which have been in operation since 1995, caters for local community children who participate in the sessions free of charge.

As a result, over 130 children have been exposed to the disciplines involved in sailing, and a number of them have represented Trinidad and Tobago in a number of regional and international contests. In fact, a few of the participants have returned to work with the Sailing School as part-time instructors.

From the outset, the programme catered for youths in the western peninsula but, last September, children from the St Dominic’s Home and the St Michael’s Home for Children were included .

At present, there are 24 children from the Carenage Boys’ and Girls’ schools, as well as both St Dominic’s and St Michael’s Homes at the Outreach Programme.
