Body found stuck in a tree

The body of BWIA captain Ronald Hadden was discovered 60 feet down a precipice on the trunk of a fallen tree at Maracas Bay on Wednesday night. His silver Nissan Primera remained lodged between trees 500 metres further down the precipice.

An autopsy on the body revealed that Hadden died of an aneurysm of the brain and not from the accident. Hadden is believed to have suffered the aneurysm while returning from Maracas Bay between 5 and 5.30 pm on Wednesday.

Reports revealed that Hadden, who worked with BWIA for the past 31 years, left his Holiday Park home in Diego Martin on Wednesday, telling his wife Rosemary that he was going to Long Circular Mall.

When he failed to return home at about 11.30 pm, she became worried and tried to call his cell phone. However, the calls went unanswered.

Knowing that Hadden loved to visit Maracas Bay on his day off, worried relatives contacted the Maracas Bay police.

At about 5.30 pm, the police contacted the National Helicopter Services and, through aerial surveillance, they saw Hadden’s car down a precipice about 500 metres north of the Maracas lookout.

Fire officers were alerted, and with officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force, the search for Hadden’s body was conducted. The body was found about 60 feet down a precipice on the trunk of a fallen tree. At 8 pm on Wednesday, police officers contacted Hadden’s relatives, who positively identified the body.

District Medical Officer Dr Iqbal Ackbar ordered the removal of the body to the Port-of-Spain mortuary.

When Newsday visited the scene of the accident, police and fire officers were preparing to retrieve the car. Officers said they did not know if anyone else was in the car with Hadden at the time of the incident, and a search was carried out near the area where Hadden’s body was found.

However, bake and shark vendors at Maracas Bay told Newsday that Hadden purchased a bake and shark at about 4 pm.

They believe that he may have died at about 5 pm while returning home.

At the Hadden’s home, relatives told Newsday that he was a kind, caring and loving person.

They added that he will be sadly missed.

The funeral for Hadden, a father of two, Paul and Melissa, will take place on Monday.

Yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago Airline Pilots Association issued a press release describing Hadden as a very talented, experienced and dedicated pilot throughout his career, which began at Liat.

Hadden spent his last 31 years at BWIA and was a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Airline Pilots Association (TALPA).

Officers of the Maracas Bay Police Station are investigating.
