Changar steals show in US splash
JOSHUA CHANGAR stole the show, in the Boys’ 9-10 age group, at the 25th annual Martin Luther King Swim Classic, which took place recently at the Nassau County Aquatic Center, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, Long Island, New York. Changar was part of a 19-member Tidal Wave Aquatics Swim Club team who featured in the event earlier this month. And he copped five gold medals, in the 200-yard freestyle, 100 and 200-yard individual medley, 50 and 100-yard breaststroke. Changar also earned silver medals in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly. Another top local swimmer, Jonathan Fabio, was also successful in the Boys’ 9-10, capturing gold medals in the 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard butterfly; as well as silver medals in the 50-yard breaststroke, 100 and 200-yard individual medley; and bronze medals in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. Both Changar and Fabio teamed up with Gabriel Garrett and Micah Billouin to finish second in the 10-and-Under 200-yard freestyle relay, and fourth in the 200-yard medley relay. In the boys’ 13-14 category, Christopher Buffong won the 200-yard individual medley. Donna-Marie Wickham, competing in the Open female division, took gold in the 100-yard backstroke and silver medals in the 200-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle. Wickham then combined with Jhenille London, Raenelle Carillo and Quitara La Guerre to finish third in the women’s 400-yard medley relay. Joseph Ryan emerged victorious in the open male section, with gold medals in the 200 and 400-yard individual medley races, as well as the 100-yard butterfly. He also copped silver in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle; and bronze in the 50-yard freestyle. Orlando Thom was the first swimmer to touch the wall in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, 100-and-200 yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle while Anthony Edwards finished third in the 100-yard backstroke. Ryan, Thom later joined Anthony and David Edwards to claim two victories, in the men’s 400-yard freestyle and medley relays. Meanwhile, the Tidal Wave club will be hosting the annual National Secondary Schools’ Swim Meet on February 12 at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence Swimming Pool Complex, Macoya, Tunapuna.
