Flood waters recede
The flood waters throughout the island, caused by heavy rain earlier this week, have finally subsided. The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services yesterday confirmed that there have been no reports of flooding over the past 24 hours. Residents and farmers living in nearby communities have reportedly lost thousands of dollars in livestock and crops to the raging waters over the past week. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), reported that relief operations are continuing at this time; also assessment teams of the Ministry of Social Development and the Regional Corporations are still out in the field ensuring all affected homes are assessed. The Coast Guard conducted evacuation exercises in Mafeking and Chrysostom Trace in Mayaro of persons affected by flood waters. Some persons were removed and are currently staying with relatives and friends. The waters have since receded and persons will be returning home. The ODPM National Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) has been scaled down, but continues to monitor and co-ordinate relief efforts. The ODPM maintained its vigilance in monitoring the situation and continues to coordinate the ongoing response. Meanwhile, Agricul-ture Minister Jarette Narine and Works and Transport Minister Colm Imbert toured several communities affected by the floods, including the Guayamare River area through Munroe Road to Madras and El Carmen. The Meteorological Office blamed the heavy rainfall on Monday night on a jet stream in the atmosphere.
