‘Soca’ Kelly goes chutney
Kelly Telani, who came in from South Hampton, England, to perform for Carnival, is now on the cast of the Massive Gosine’s Roving Chutney tent. She will perform two soca songs with Keyz Rock Band and makes her first appearance with the tent at the Triangle Amphitheatre in Rio Claro on Saturday. The show moves to the Triangle in Aranjuez on Sunday. Kelly was a hit on Saturday when she made a guest appearance at the chutney soca semi-finals at Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre. "Kelly’s song, ‘Show Me the Money’ is not only uptempo, but it will carry some of the chutney rhythm for the local fans," Massive said. Kelly and her band "The ENV" will perform at 14 venues with the Roving Tent. According to the tent’s entertainment manager Phillip Edinborough, both Kelly and The ENV became interested in performing soca after seeing a number of local acts in England. Since the group arrived three weeks ago, they have been meeting with musical arrangers and musicians to prepare for their stage performances. Kelly wants to do a remake of the pop song, "Girls Wanna Fun" with the local band Impulse. Popular comedian and composer Kenneth Supersad and the 2005 National Chutney Foundation’s monarch Kerry Ramgobin have also joined the roving tent. Ramgobin’s tune "Caura River" is now climbing the local charts. He took the monarch title in July 2005 with the song, "Try Unity."
