Soca Warriors to tour south
PENAL will be the next stop for the Soca Warriors football team. The Germany bound national team are to make an official tour around the country staring on May 11. For too long, small communities have been denied opportunities of sharing in such sports glory, said FIFA vice-president Austin Jack Warner on Monday. Warner presented 120 footballs on Monday for distribution to schools and clubs in Debe and Penal. The presentation was made to the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation at Wilson Road Recreation Ground. "For too long," Warner said, "persons in small communities have been denied and left out." Warner said that a myth has been propogated that "football was for Africans and cricket was for East Indians." Pointing out that sport knows no race, the FIFA vice president said that "football required a person’s sensibilities and not his race." Warner’s donation was in response to a request by chairman of the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation, Dr Allen Sammy. But Warner noted that proper facilities and sporting seminars, were also needed to produce an excellent football team. "Time has come to explore the talent in the district," Warner said. Warner promised that during the course of the year, a football coach from every school in the district would be given the opportunity to attend football seminars at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya.
