Crime and humour at South Kaiso mix

BITING southern humour, competed with calls for a crime-free TT from calypsonians at Wednesday night’s gala opening of TUCO’s Kaiso Showkase tent at Palms Club.

The show, themed "Kaiso Komess," attracted a large audience who arrived long before the scheduled 8 pm start. Packing the large auditorium to capacity, a 19-member cast delivered a scintillating blend of Calypso, Chutney and Soca.

The audience cheered lustily.

It was calypsonian Joanne Foster, however, who set the audience alight with a plea to reduce crime and "bring back sweet TT to how it used to be."

Her moving rendition sparked resounding applause, prompting MC Damian Melville to jokingly threaten, "I’ll do like Master Baker and launch a one-man protest if Foster is not selected for the Dimanche Gras competition." Biting commentaries on the state of the nation came from "Ras Kommanda," who sang "Ree Ann," a cleverly written kaiso on an elitist group in society.

El Drago, armed with a wooden gun, injected emotions in his song, "Destroy crime." Another crowd favourite was "Prospector" who advised the audience to "Hold Yuh Nose" whenever people raised their hands in the air during a fete.

Calypsonian Tricia, dressed as a belly dancer, raised temperatures during her performance of "Roses" when, backed by members of the D Vikash Dance group, she engaged in a vigorous "chook" wine that had male members of the audience gripping their seats.

Guest performer, Heeralal Rampartap, rendered "Dai Meh Family."

The show continues every Thursday, Friday and Saturday — until Carnival Tuesday.
