Businessman in court for woman’s murder
SAN FERNANDO businessman Vijay Nanan was taken before a Justice of the Peace yesterday charged with the murder of moneylender Angela Ragoonanansingh, 46. Nanan, 36, of Rousillac, was escorted from the San Fernando Police Station to the nearby magistrates’ court at 3.20 pm. He was then taken to Justice of the Peace (JP) Amichan Sookram. Ragoonanansingh was shot dead in a store at the corner of High Street and Pointe-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando, at about 9 am on Tuesday. She was cremated yesterday.
Nanan was charged with Ragoonanansingh’s murder yesterday afternoon by Cpl Kirk Griffith of the Homicide (South) Division. Yesterday, some of Nanan’s relatives, including his wife, Kerry, and PNM Local Government councillor, Alvin Reed, turned up in the courthouse for the businessman’s brief appearance. Nanan was represented in court by attorney Feraaz Mohammed, while police prosecutor Cpl Dowrich represented the State. Mohammed told the JP that he had intended to make an application before the court because of Nanan’s medical condition. He said he had a medical certificate to support his application. Sookram advised Mohammed to make the application today, when Nanan would appear before a magistrate. Sookram remanded Nanan into custody.
