Ramesh on UNC platform next Sunday

FORMER attorney general of the UNC Government, who was expelled from the party, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, is listed among a battery of speakers to address a public meeting of the party on Sunday, February 19, at 2 pm, at Mid Centre Mall Car Park, Chaguanas. The former Team Unity Leader will speak on the  issue of “The Abuse of Power,”  by the State. Approval for him to be on the platform of  speakers was taken at the National Executive meeting. Asked if this is a signal that Maharaj would be returning to the party,  Chairman Basdeo Panday quipped, “You will have to ask Mr Maharaj that, of course.”

Panday said that the theme of that public meeting will be “the use of the Illegal and  Coercive machinery of the State (Abuse of Power) as being practised by the PNM Government.” Topics will deal with the recent court case of a lawyer; the matter with Sadiq Baksh with respect to the statement allegedly made by Vernon Paul, the recent issue involving the  EBC,  and Conduct of the Integrity Commission. “These are some of the matters that will be discussed at the meeting on February 19,” Panday said. Asked about the question of unity of the UNC, if it is preparing for elections, Panday said, “This party is committed to unity and this Leader of the Opposition  has indicated that he will do all in his power  to bring about unity.”
