3 held for hunting in Nariva Swamp

THREE men were arrested in the Nariva Swamp, Plum Mitan yesterday, for illegally hunting and being in possession of robins, which are protected animals. The men were held by a unit of game wardens led by senior game warden Samsundar Ramdeen. According to Ramdeen, “We were on patrol when we spotted the men catching the birds with mist nets and bird lime, which is used to capture the birds, but as we were approaching them, they ran away.

But we chased, caught and handcuffed them. They had six robins in their possession and they will be charged under the Conservation of Wildlife Act Chapter 67:0:1 Section 5. They also had cutlasses.” He said the men are to appear in the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court today. “The men came from Sangre Grande, Biche and Plum Mitan,” he said, “with one man being in his 50s and the other two are in their 20s.” Charges were laid by game warden Steve Seepersad. The third officer involved in the exercise was game warden Ramlal.
