Lovers in scramble for Valentine’s gift
Love was in the air in Port-of-Spain yesterday, as husbands and wives, girlfriends and boyfriends, filled flower shops and candy stores looking for a gift for that special loved one for Valentine’s Day. Sweet Fifi’s in Town Centre Mall, Frederick Street, was packed with teenagers and adults alike, with many purchasing teddy bears and chocolates. The Garden of Eden flower shop on Abercromby Street was impossible to enter as several men were in the process of buying floral arrangements. Jewelry stores on Frederick Street were filled with people, while sidewalk music vendors encouraged customers to buy love tunes for Valentine’s Day. Soca artiste Destra Garcia shared her plans for Valentine’s Day. She said despite having a performance today said she hoped to have a quiet, romantic evening with many surprises. Other artistes were reluctant to speak about their plans. However, one soca hunk said he was a bit confused at the time, and needed to clear his head. In South Trinidad, fresh red roses were the order of the day. Business owners on High Street, San Fernando, said this year’s sales were of a mixed variety of lingerie, jewelry and stuffed toys, but roses were the number one seller. Mark Moodie at Floralistics Flower Shop reported a 50 percent sales increase during the past fortnight, while Lisa Mahabir of Tropical Blossoms said orders for fresh red roses had been completely booked. An employee at Lydia’s, a New York Experience, said edible underwear was also a hot seller among its male clientele.
