No bail for radio DJ on coke charge

RADIO disc jockey Star-child (Marinus Ayers) yesterday appeared before Magistrate Deborah Quintyne at the Arima First Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempting to export 1,457 grammes of cocaine, and possession of the drug for the purpose of trafficking.

Ayers, 38, head DJ at 104.7 FM, was arrested at Piarco Airport last Satur-day as he was about to board BWIA flight 526 for New York.

The cocaine was allegedly found inside several packets from curry makers, Chief Brand, which were hidden among jeans and other clothing in a suitcase. The DJ, who has been in police custody since the alleged discovery of the drugs, walked into the Arima Court from the holding bay in handcuffs when the matter was called yesterday afternoon.

Unrepresented, the in-dictable charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking was read to him. He was not called on to plead.

On the charge of at-tempting to export co-caine, Ayers pleaded not guilty.

A large Elite Collection suitcase allegedly found in his possession was placed before the court, and items of clothing were removed. Packets of a substance re-sembling cocaine allegedly found in them were presented before the court.

One blue Shady Ltd jeans with patches on the inside contained two Chief Brand Baking Powder packets. Another blue Enyce jeans contained one Lotus Icing Sugar, and two Chief Baking Powder packets in patches on the inside.

One Allan Stuart sweater contained three packets of Chief Ground Urdi Dhal, and one Chief Ground Channa packet. In addition, another Chief Ground Channa packet was found in a patch inside a Trader Bay sweater. All contained a substance resembling cocaine, the court was told.

Ayers asked Quintyne if he could change his plea to guilty, and she replied that she could not entertain it at that point.

She advised him to get a lawyer, and remanded him into custody again until the next hearing on Thursday.
