Malabar teen gunned down

IMAM Hassan Ali, father of murdered Malabar teen Zaffar Ali, believes his son’s death was the result of gang warfare. Ali, the Arima branch leader of the Jamaat al Muslimeen, refused to give details except to point fingers at the Arima cell of a well known criminal gang.

"It was a set-up. It is a gang-related killing. My son went to collect money for a friend he met in prison and was set up.

"When Zaffar was released from prison recently, he was asked by an inmate to collect some money from someone at a house in La Horquetta to pay his bail. He was waiting on the money when he was shot," Ali told Sunday Newsday.

He added: "I don’t know if the man he went to help knew of the set-up or was used but I know it was a set-up because that was the only way a gunman could be waiting there for him."

At around 7.30 pm on Friday, Zaffar Ali, 18, of Melodians Crescent, Malabar was sitting in a car at Tacoma Boulevard, La Horquetta, when a gunman walked up to the vehicle and fired several shots hitting him in his chest and head. The teen was rushed to the Arima Medical Facility and then the Eric Williams Medical complex where he died.

"I am not saying my son was an angel or a saint," said Ali. "He had his run-ins with the police but he was a good-boy . . . respectful, good-mannered, prayerful. He had become very serious and family oriented with his first child on the way. "He was in the process of setting up his own computer business." Ali said while the death of his son was "tragic and painful" he will not seek revenge.

"We will investigate and leave the findings in the hands of Allah," he said.

Zaffar Ali is the 50th murder victim for the year. Visiting the scene were Sgt Forde and PC Mohammed of the Homicide Bureau (East) Investigations into the murder are continuing.
