BWIA women jet into history
CARIBBEAN AVIATION history was made on Sunday when a BWIA Boeing 737-800 jet aircraft was piloted by an all-female cockpit crew comprising Capt Wendy Yawching and First Officer, Karen Siu Butt. In a statement yesterday, BWIA said BW 431 originated in Miami and landed at Piarco International Airport at about 10 pm on Sunday "under the command of female pilots." "This is a significant milestone in BWIA’s history and for aviation in Trinidad and Tobago. "The entire BWIA family congratulates the pilots on this achievement. We encourage young women to pursue careers in this dynamic area," BWIA corporate communications manager Dionne Ligoure said. However, the airline said the female pilots turned down requests for interviews and photos being taken of them for security reasons. Women have been piloting planes for years, and all-female crews have flown smaller planes, but this is the first time a jet has been piloted only by women.
