Lawrence anxious to rejoin ‘Soca Warriors’

"SOCA WARRIORS" hero in Bahrain, Dennis "Tallest" Lawrence, the man who scored the only goal which pitchforked Trinidad and Tobago into the World Cup finals in Germany in June is anxious to rejoin his team-mates "and get back to what we have been accustomed doing — playing football."

It has been roughly four months since Lawrence’s headed goal gave the "Soca Warriors" that memorable and history-making victory over Bahrain.

Since then, there have been constant requests for documentaries, photo shoots and interviews coming the way of coach Leo Beenhakker, Lawrence and his team-mates.

Television crews from Sweden, Germany, Peru, England and the United States have visited the offices of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation.

Contacts have also been made with "Soca Warriors" players both home and abroad, and the recently established website www.socawarriorstt.com, has been visited by 72 countries.

Skipper Dwight Yorke and his "Soca Warriors" will reassemble for the first time since Bahrain, to play an international friendly against Iceland at Loftus Road, England. Lawrence said: "It’s been crazy. There has been a lot more interest in me from the media since we qualified. We are all definitely looking forward to regrouping for the Iceland game.

"Playing football as a team and continuing what got us here in the first place is the most important thing," he added.

"I am sure all the Caribbean fans up on this end will also be excited for this one (the match against Iceland)," the Wrexham player said.

Lawrence will arrive at the Renaissance Hotel on Sunday morning to rejoin his fellow "Soca Warriors" in a 20-man squad.

Midfield supremo Russell Latapy has been experiencing some hamstring problems but is expected to be ready in time for Tuesday’s match while the other injured, Kenwyne Jones and Chris Birchall are also said to be in shape.

The squad is: Lawrence, Latapy, Jones, Birchall, Anthony Warner, Ricky Shakes, Nigel Henry, Anthony Noreiga, Kevon Neaves, Shaka Hislop, Clayton Ince, Avery John, Marvin Andrews, Cyd Gray, Aurtis Whitley, Silvio Spann, Carlos Edwards, Stern John, Collin Samuel, Dwight Yorke.
