PM Mitchell queries WI players’ fund
ST GEORGE’S: Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has raised queries over a fund which was set up to offer employment to the region’s top cricketers. Dr Mitchell, speaking on a sports programme here last weekend, said that Grenada was one of two countries which had made contributions to the fund set up by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). "Today we have never had an accounting from the Board (WICB). No cricket league came out, no contracts were given but we have not been given accounting information, so where the money has gone," Dr Mitchell queried. "If anything the Board has a responsibility to give back Grenada and the other countries that invested because they have not told us what they used this money for." He said that some Prime Ministers have indicated that "unless they are very clear that there is an accounting mechanism they would not be able to give the tax-payers money." Mitchell, chairman of CARICOM’s Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on cricket, said Grenada was always prepared to make a contribution to assist in the development of the sport but not to the detriment of its resources. "I’m not regretting it, except to say that in the future if we have to invest from any of the tax-payers resources we’ll expect to have a serious programme in place and not somebody’s wish that will not come through," he said. The fund is believed to have been abandoned because of the lack of support from some of the bigger territories.
