Four in court for businessman’s murder
FOUR men yesterday appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate to face several charges arising out of the July 8, 2005, kidnapping and murder of a South businessman. Martin Critchlow, 35, of Lady Hailes Avenue, San Fernando; Clifford Sorias, 27; Kendall Davis, 22, and Garth O’Brien, 32, all of Grand Curacaye, Santa Cruz, appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan at the city’s Four B Court. Critchlow and Sorias are charged with the kidnapping and murder of real estate agent Gerald Gopaul. Davis is charged with the false imprisonment of Gopaul, and O’Brien is charged with accessory after the fact. Gopaul, of Diamond Village, San Fernando, was snatched from the Diamond Recreation Bar on July 8, 2005. His body, wrapped in plastic, was found by soldiers at Tram Rail Road, St Augustine, 11 days later. Nine other persons are expected to be charged with offences arising out of the incident, and six persons, who are already incarcerated, are expected to be charged with the murder over the weekend. O’Brien will reappear in court on March 3, Davis on March 7, and Critchlow and Sorias on March 6. The murder matter was transferred to the Tunapuna Magistrates’ Court and the kidnapping matters to the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court. The charges were laid by Cpl Michael Veronique of the Homicide Bureau.
