Coach Leo expects tough test for ‘Warriors’
“SOCA WARRIORS” coach Leo Beenhakker is expecting a tough challenge from Iceland in Carnival Tuesday’s friendly international. But he is happy for the match which he said is just what the “Soca Warriors” need at this stage of their preparation for World Cup Germany 2006. Beenhakker, who arrived in England yesterday morning along with assistant coaches Wim Rijsbergen and Anton Corneal, said he was hoping to get the best out of his new recruits Kevon Neaves, Anthony Noreiga, Ricky Shakes and Nigel Henry.
He said: “We have called these players because they have shown that they deserve a chance to play and we’ll see what they can bring to the team. This is why we have brought them into the squad for this game.” Beenhakker added: “It is the first time we are becoming a team again since November and it is important that we get it together again and try our best to work as a team.” He noted all teams are preparing for the World Cup “just as we are,” and that this game is part of what they have set up to get themselves ready for June.
“The Iceland team brings a good type of Scandanavian style similar to what Sweden play,” he said. The TT team includes Silvio Spann, Nigel Henry, Aurtis Whitley, Cyd Gray, team officials Bruce Aanensen (manager), Zeph Nicholas (physiotherapist), Wayne Lawson (trainer), Michael Maurice (goalkeeper coach) and Press officer Shaun Fuentes. Those already in London are assistant manager George Joseph and equipment managers Ikin Williams and Esmond O’Brien and team doctor Terrence Babwah. Overseas players are expected to join the team in London today, except Fulham goalkeeper Anthony Warner. Because of club commitments he is expected at team headquarters Renaissance Hotel, Heathrow, on Sunday night.
