Today is Ash Wednesday — Lent begins

SOBRIETY has returned after two days of revelry on the streets for Carnival, as today marks the start of the 40-day Lenten period observed by members of the Christian community.

Many will flock to churches throughout the country today to get the customary ashes on their foreheads.

There will be midday masses at both the Sacred Heart RC on Richmond Street, Port-of-Spain, and the Trinity Cathedral on Queen Street.

The 40-day Lenten fast is a time of contemplation and reflection which culminates on April 15, the day before Easter. For the Roman Catholic community, Lent officially ends at sundown on April 13, Holy Thursday, which is the beginning of the mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Lent originated in the very earliest days of the church as a preparatory time for Easter when the faithful rededicate themselves, and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the 40 days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness.
