John John readies for protest
As a result of the scheduled meeting with the HDC, members of the John John and environs group called off a protest outside the site of the proposed centre at Eastern Main Road and Picton Street in Laventille.
A member of the group, Philbert Bonos told Newsday the protest was planned because they were not getting information about the centre. He said they were told the centre is a project of the HDC and the Ministry of Social Development.
Bonos said the residents were prepared to stand up for their community. He explained that residents resent the location of the centre in the area because “we don’t have a community centre, health centre or day-care centre.”
He believes that the needs of the community should be first met. He suggested that the Assessment Centre be located in the Westmoorings area.
