Grief over large tombs

These large tombs are occupying valuable space in three public cemeteries in San Fernando. On Thursday, the San Fernando City Corporation released an architectural plan for the construction of tombs.

The corporation has advised there must be strict adherence to the specified design, created by its engineering department, to replace mausoleums (a large stately structure housing a tomb).

Corporation officials told Newsday that existing tombs will be left alone but any new ones must be built based on the guidelines for the design and size specifications.

The design stipulates that a tomb must be constructed with a tapered top no more than three inches wide, and the foundation must not be thicker than six inches.

The height of the tomb (from foundation to top) must not exceed four feet.
