Crime Stoppers get more calls
Walrath, who met with Prime Minister Patrick Manning at Whitehall, said: “the percentages have been going up. The number of calls coming in has increased.
Between 2003 and 2005, the police here have doubled their arrests because of people who made actionable calls.”
Walrath said these are calls giving information on which the police can act. He said the success of Crime Stoppers in TT showed the public is more aware of the group and their confidence in it has grown.
Crime Stoppers TT head Martin George, Arima Discount Mart (ADM) managing director Balliram Maharaj and National Security Minister Martin Joseph were also present at the Whitehall meeting. Walrath told Newsday the purpose of the meeting was to express appreciation to Manning for his support, not only in Budgetary allocations but also through the National Security Ministry.
He said he also wanted to state his wish to continue working with the public and private sectors in TT to effectively deal with crime. Walrath said he met earlier with Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Orville London and Police Commissioner Trevor Paul. Crime Stoppers was scheduled to have a breakfast meeting with members of the private sector at La Boucan Room at the Hilton Hotel this morning.
