Songshine puts up Resistance
At last month’s edition, which featured a crowd-pleasing performance by Ozymajic as well as several other musicians and poets, Resistance was in attendance for the first time.
“It was wonderful just to have him come through,” said Songshine host and producer Gillian Moor. “So you can imagine how exciting it is for him to be actually guesting - and just in time for rapso season.
“The shows have been really great. We’ve had so many people come through and bless us with their work. It’s great to see all the young talent that’s come forth and that now has a space to grow. All artistes need that kind of nurturing space; you never stop developing,” Moor said.
The singer/songwriter, pointed out that there were more programmes that were offering artistes platforms to show their creativity.
“And it’s not just Songshine; there are several scenes taking place right now – the Speakeasy, UWeSpeak, the Moonlight Gathering, Writers Block, Circle of Poets... going all the way back to Izahvibe a few years ago.
“I think this creative outpouring we’re witnessing is a positive sign for the society. It means that we, as a people, are finding our voice. It’s especially encouraging to see that young people are at the forefront of this movement, creating their own spaces as an alternative to simply accepting what they’ve traditionally been fed,” Moor said.
Also in tomorrow’s line-up will be Word Sound and Power, Solaris, members of the Blackman family and poet Gamma Ghost.
Songshine will be hosted at Trevor’s Edge (formerly Tony’s Tavern), #1 St John Road, St Augustine, from 7 pm.
