Toolsie Mungal takes tassa title

Toolsie Mungal’s group delighted the audience with an impressive performance, while a contingent of dancers and dramatists helped the Country Boys Tassa Group with their presentation.

The contest, which took place at the Samar Entertainment Centre in Debe, attracted a large crowd of tassa supporters.

Host of the programme, Fazeer Rojan, said that drumming was an ancient musical tradition that many cultures around the world use to energise, build unity, focus attention, relax and heighten creativity.

“No matter our age and ability, whenever we hear drumming, we all begin to move to rhythms of the drums,” he said. He expressed the hope that the competition would spark interest and participation throughout the community, as it showcases the wealth and musical talent that the country has to offer.

“We must all carry on the flame that our forefathers have lit for us. We must ensure that in the future, the flame of our heritage and culture will only burn brighter,” he said.

Taking third place in the competition was Lutchman Boys Tassa Group with SSL St John’s Tassa Drummers fourth.

In fifth position was the Dynamics Tassa Group. The prize for the “Best Newcomer” went to the R&C Tandava Tassa Drummers.

This group also won the Tunapuna Tassorama and placed second in the Prime Minister’s Best Village Competition in 2005.

The competition which was held on Marh 25 is sponored by Republic Bank of Penal. The bank has been hosting the popular event since 1984.
