Human torch dies

Larry Maharaj of Sunset Avenue, Aripero, died at about 3 am at San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) where he had been warded since the incident on March 13.

A police report stated Maharaj was being treated for third-degree burns following the incident which occurred at his home. Maharaj, a close relative and his (Maharaj) neighbour were liming, police said, when an argument broke out between Maharaj and his relative.

Maharaj took up a gallon containing a mixture of gas and oil and threw it on himself. Witnesses told police he struck a match and set himself on fire.

Police said the flames were quickly doused but Maharaj suffered major burns and was taken to hospital. An autopsy will be carried out at the Forensic Science Centre today.

Sgt Ramnanan is continuing inquiries.
