Romany, Wickham splash to CARIFTA golds
On the first day of competition, the TT swimmers captured 15 medals, inclusive of two gold, four silver and nine bronze.
The 14-year-old Romany defeated his rivals in the Boys’ 13-14 50-metre backstroke in 29.51 seconds, with archrival and countryman Christian Homer second in 29.67 while.
In the Girls’ 15-17 equivalent, Wickham was victorious in 32.09, while fellow TT swimmer Brittany Stewart was third in 34.32. Kadeja Phillip was second in the Girls’ 11-12 100m butterfly in one minute 14.27 seconds, while fellow 12-year-old national Makayla Armstrong was next in 1:14.70.
Other silver medal performances came from the Ggirls’ 11-12 400m freestyle relay, who clocked 4:30.76 and the Boys’ 13-14 version in 3:56.10.
Among the bronze medallists were Jarryd Gregoire, who clocked 17 minutes, 25.84 in the Boys’ 15-17 1500m freestyle; Ryan Rigues, who swam 2:43.26 in the Boys’ 13-14 200m breaststroke; Kimba Collymore, who touched the wall in 2:48.01 in the Girls’ 15-17 equivalent; Renee Gordon, who sped to 35.12 in the girls’ 11-12 50m backstroke
Also earning bronze were the Girls’ 13-14 400m freestyle relay (4:23.48) and the Girls’ 15-17 equivalent (4:15.67).
And the women’s waterpolo squad were beaten 14-2 by Jamaica.
