Morton hits 63 for Comet
The 27-year-old right-hander, who scored prolifically on the Windies’ recent tour of New Zealand, cracked 63 but his side still fell to an innings and 49-run defeat to Alescon Comet at Gilbert Park in California.
Comet, resuming on 271 for six with Suruj Ragoonath on 106, declared at 351 for nine, with the former West Indies opening batsman finishing on 148, including 16 fours and two sixes.
With a deficit of 252 runs, Wanderers were bundled out by the spin of Imran Khan and folded for 203, with only Morton offering any resistance. Khan ended with figures of five for 43.
Comet moved up in the standings to second place with 110 points.
Title-chasing PowerGen Sports recorded their fourth outright victory in the competition, when they registered another impressive win by defeating Ceramic Merry Boys Sports by seven wickets, at Syne Village in Penal.
PowerGen, who had already taken first innings lead from the visitors of Diego Martin, resumed on 206 for seven and went on to be dismissed for 291 runs, establishing an important 90-run lead.
Batting a second time, Merry Boys gave a listless batting display and were routed for 163, with West Indies Under-19 spinner Rishi Bachan picking up five for 45.
Left to score 74 for victory, PowerGen romped home for the loss of three wickets.
With the win, PowerGen has gone to 128 points in the eight-team standings, 18 more than defending champions Alescon Comet.
Also tasting victory was Queen’s Park Cricket Club cricketers, who defeated lowly-rated Joe Public Munroe Road Sports by an innings and 98 runs at the Oval.
At the Inshan Ali Park in Preysal, Clico Preysal Sports took first innings lead against FCB Clarke Road United.
Point standings after five rounds of matches:
Division One: PowerGen Sports 128 pts, Comet 110, Preysal 102, Clarke Road 88, Queen’s Park 79, Merry Boys 64, Wanderers 37, Munroe Road 20.
