Mon Repos appeals for Easter Fest funding
He is also asking the various ministers to help bring different programmes into the community.
“We (the club members) want to make a difference and do something for the youths,” said Chance. “A lot of them are at home for the vacation or unemployed — just liming on the streets and doing nothing progressive. They are on the block drinking and smoking. I am trying to raise awareness and encourage the ministers to come see what’s going on and see how they can help.”
Chance extends thanks to Junior National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds for helping in this venture and urges others to contribute to the Easter Fest. Donations towards the building of the centre will also be welcomed and accepted, he said.
Every year, the Youth Fest is held in honour of the late Marvin Lee, former National Youth Under-20 football captain, who was born and raised in Mon Repos. The programme of activities is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 6 pm with a ceremony at the grounds opposite Bango Snackette. There, Hinds and others will open the event with speeches, following which food and drinks will be on sale and a DJ will entertain those in attendance.
On Friday at 10 am, a small-goal football match will take place on the grounds. Two Mon Repos teams, Barcelona and Arsenal will play against each other. Arsenal is the Chinapoo School Football League’s defending champions and both teams will be playing for the Marvin Lee Challenge Trophy. The match will be followed with a “blocko” to celebrate the champion’s victory.
Activities continue on Saturday with a cricket match and later a dance will be held from 9 pm. Admission is $10. Sunday will be the sports day with games for both children and adults. On Monday, All-Fours is the name of the game with a concert starting at 5 pm.
The concert will include performances by Serge, King Austin, the Woodbrook Playboyz, the Mon Repos Cultural Dancers, Brigo, the Daybreak Assembly Puppet Masters and more.
People willing to make donations can contact Chance at 758-3276.
