Where will my garbage go?
The Minister of Public Utilities announced that the Beetham Estate landfill will be closed due to the medical problems that the site is causing to the surrounding inhabitants of the area as well as the fact that it is filled to capacity.
The Beetham Estate generates about 720 tonnes of waste per day. However, of that waste at least 40 percent of it is recyclable.
Waste such as paper, glass, metals and even plastic can be reintroduced into the economy.
I do hope that in closing the estate the Ministry of Public Utilities, along with the Ministry of Environment, considers new recycling initiatives to reduce the amount of waste in all of Trinidad’s landfills. I’m sure that there are many that can be considered.
