Boy, 5, killed in Las Lomas
Police reports revealed that at about 1 pm, Jose Samuel was standing at the southern side of the roadway with his mother Kumarie Samuel, 41, close to Light pole 171, Chin Chin Road, Las Lomas, when he darted across the roadway on seeing a male relative.
Samuel was struck by a car travelling east and received severe head injuries.
The boy was rushed to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr Rajendra Teelucksingh.
The driver of the car was questioned and his vehicle seized. It will be examined by Licensing officers as part of the investigation.
A party of officers led by Sgt Chunilal Bedassie and including Ag Cpl Williams and PC James visited the scene of the incident and recorded statements from several eyewitnesses.
The mother of the child was too distraught to be interviewed and was treated for shock.
A relative of the child said yesterday that he was lost for words and could not come to terms with the death.
He described Samuel as a bubbly, bright and special child who had a very promising future.
The relative added that Jose visited relatives with his mother yesterday but was anxious to return to his home.
The body of the child was removed to the Port-of-Spain Mortuary and an autopsy was carded for yesterday.
So far in 2006, 52 people have been killed in road accidents.
