Call for nature park in Central
Ramoutar made the call when he piloted a motion at the 32nd statutory meeting of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation, in Couva, last week.
Ramoutar recommended that the Government set up a nature park in Chickland, adding that the Emperor Valley Zoo did not seem, “to charm the populace with its spread of nature, wildlife and a true environmental setting with nature trails, parks, water recreational facilities among other facilities.” “The establishment of a 40-acre nature park ... on lands donated by Sou Sou Lands Limited at Chickland will provide for a multi-purpose facility for the display of animals and birds within our land, and the Caribbean countries in a more natural and humane environment,” he said.
As the councillor for Edinburgh/Chickland, Ramoutar said a nature park would enhance the area’s tourism drive, bring in additional foreign exchange, provide employment and help to develop Chickland and environs.
His colleague, councillor Ranjit Ramnarine, also agreed with the motion and found too that the zoo had not modernised its management.
“Animals like humans need space and must be free to move around, and the present Emperor Valley Zoo reflects the old notion of nature and wildlife game-keeping,” said Ramnarine.
“The motion seeks to offer such comfort to animals and some birds. It is a noteworthy presentation that requires the swift response from the Government. The time to act is now,” he added.
