Cancer room for kids at Mt Hope
Approximately 50 new cases of children with cancer are diagnosed annually and half of them are seen at EWMSC.
In a media release, the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) said, “parents will not have a more comfortable atmosphere to relax or have meals. It is hoped the room will provide a safe haven for the families of children currently undergoing treatment.”
The room has a lounge area, kitchenette, refrigerator and dining area. The NCRHA estimated that 60 families would benefit from the initiative. The development of the room was a joint effort by Dr Curt Bodkyn, paediatric oncologist, Department of Child Health, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and Pour L’Innocent, a nonprofit children’s charity.
The parents’ room was officially opened on April 6 by the Chief Executive Officer of the NCRHA, Charles Mitchell.
