Bermuda win first official one-dayer

The win, in Bermuda’s first official One-Day International match, put them into Saturday’s final where they will face Zimbabwe. Both Bermuda and Zimbabwe are scheduled to meet the same venue today, which will definitely be used as a trial run ahead of the final 48 hours later.

Chasing a reduced target of 150 in 44 overs, under the Duckworth-Lewis system, Bermuda were in trouble at 89 for seven before the “Man of the Match” Minors was joined by Cann, and the duo overcame any sort of nerves to carry their team to victory. The left-handed Minors scored 46 in 90 balls, which featured five fours and a six, while Cann chipped in with a brisk 32 off 28 balls with a solitary six.

Canada’s captain John Davison wrecked Bermuda’s middle-order, with a spell of three for 18 in nine overs, as the Gus Logie-coached squad seemed doomed to defeat, despite a fighting knock of 25 by Irving Romaine.

But Bermuda, whose innings were interrupted by rain, with the scoreline at 32 for three after 14 overs, did not cave into the pressure, as Minors and Cann turned the game totally in their team’s favour.

Canada’s vice-captain George Codrington blazed to an unbeaten 45 in a late-order rally as the North Americans posted 157 for nine off 49 overs, despite two brief stoppages for rain.

Davison struck 22 and Stewart Heaney, 19, but Bermuda got two wickets apiece from George O’Brien, Saleem Mukuddem, Janiero Tucker and Hasan Durham.
