Opposition Leader:
OPPOSITION LEADER Kamla Persad-Bissessar has slammed the Government for neglecting major social issues and problems relating to children.
She called on Government to proclaim the Children’s Authority Act immediately, noting that failure to do so was going to lead to more child abuse.
She was on Saturday delivering the feature address at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition’s fifth annual Mother’s Day function at the Hindu Credit Union’s Convention Centre in Freeport. Referring to the deaths of six-year-old Sean Luke and four-year-old Emily Anaman thodo, Persad-Bissessar said that not enough was being done to protect children who have been victims of abuse and who are still being abused.
The time has come in this country when in our homes, we as mothers, must accept that we have a greater than average responsibility to educate our sons and daughters about the responsibilities of being a parent, she said.
Persad-Bissessar said that the way in which the nation’s children are hurting today is a challenge for all mothers.
