Road deaths this year higher than last year

Ninety-one people have died in road deaths so far this year, bringing the number of deaths in the first quarter significantly higher than for the similar period last year.

Figures revealed that drivers and pedestrians were the main victims of road deaths with more men than women being killed on the roads.

Other figures revealed that in January last year 16 people were killed in road accidents. January this year saw 20 people dying in road crashes.

In February last year, 11 persons died compared to 14 in February this year.

Then in March 2005, 11 persons died compared with 14 this year.

In April last year 18 persons died in road deaths, while 22 were killed for the corresponding month this year.

ACP Mobile Nazamul Hosein and officers of the Highway Patrol initiated a number of special initiatives this year to arrest motorists who flout traffic regulations.

Hundreds of people were charged with a series of traffic offences.

Government is also taking steps to introduce the breathalyser to deal with drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol.
